Question 6 of 7
6. Question
SECTION III: READING
How will we travel in the future?
Did you walk to work today? Did you come on the bus? Today we talk to Sam Jones, an industrial designer, about how we could travel in the future.
Cars and buses
Henry Ford made the first popular car in 1908 and now people use them all over the world. They have changed our cities, our jobs, and our environment.
‘The way we use cars is going to change,’ says Sam. ‘I think they will be electric and not petrol and because of technology they won’t even need a driver. People will probably “call” a car from their smartphones, like taxis today, so we won’t need buses or underground trains any more.’
Trains
The first train set off in 1804. Today they transport goods and people quickly and cheaply across the planet.
‘High-speed trains are fast and very cheap to run – you can see them working very well in lots of countries like China and Japan. We are going to see more and more of them for long journeys between cities.’
Airplanes
The Wright brothers flew the first plane with an engine in 1903. Today, there are about 40 million flights a year!
‘Planes use a lot of fuel and are expensive. I think we’re going to use planes in the future, but they will look quite different. They’ll need to change so they cost less to fly, but we’ll still need them to move fast between countries and over long distances.’
Bicycles
Bicycles are a lot older than you think. The first modern bike appeared in 1885. Bikes became more popular as they got more comfortable and safer. In the 1960s, bikes became a lot faster and lighter and in the 1980s people created mountain bikes for riding off road.
‘I’m sure bicycles are going to be very important for future travel. They are cheap, good for the environment, and of course they also keep people healthy. I can imagine a future where we have more bikes on the road than cars!’
