Section I
They say you know what someone is like from their appearance. In other words, just by looking at someone’s clothes, and the way their hair is, you can easily understand what their personality is like. But is this really true, or should we be careful when we “judge a book by its cover”?
Section II
People nowadays can generally choose what they wear, and how they have their hair. This allows them to show their personality through their appearance. For example, punks are young people who wear clothes with holes in them and have bright green, red, or blue hair. They want to show that they don’t belong to the same “club” as everyone else. In the same way, someone who is outgoing or happy often wears bright colors. Someone who is sad would never do this, so when we see someone who is wearing black, we know how they feel.
Section III
But these examples may be extreme. Most people dress in the same way. Most teenagers wear jeans, sneakers, and T-shirts. Most office workers wear suits. Police officers and fire fighters wear a uniform. In the first example, they are following fashion. In the other examples, they’re wearing what they are expected to wear for work. In both cases, there is not much that we can understand about their personalities. The other thing is that people wear clothes that are less extreme as they get older. This doesn’t mean that they are losing their personalities.
Section IV
It is easy to decide what someone is like from their clothes. We may make a big mistake if we do it all the time, though. It is better to look at their faces. The eyes, the mouth, and the rest of the face are easier to “read” than clothing. When someone has kind eyes, it doesn’t matter what their clothes are like. They might be old and dirty, but the person is still kind. If someone has a mean face, they are mean. That doesn’t change if they have a bright shirt on.
