8. Question
SECTION IV: READING
Read the article. Then choose the best response.
Milestones Throughout the Ages
Section I
The Romans ruled Great Britain for almost four centuries. During that time they built straight roads through the hills and British countryside so that soldiers and the supplies they needed could get from place to place easily. It was also easier for traders to take their goods to towns and cities. Along these roads the Romans placed milestones made out of stone and marble to help travelers find their way. The stones were usually tall so people could see them clearly and they had on them the name of the Emperor of that time and the distance to the nearest town.
Section II
Today on modern highways we can still see these signs. They are no longer made of stone and marble but they still inform travelers of the distances to their destination. The signs are usually placed every 10 miles or so, which is very useful to help drivers know if they are traveling on the right road. They are also helpful to engineers who repair the highways to know exactly where they are needed. Also, if there is an accident on the highway, paramedics or firefighters waste no time in reaching their destination.
Section III
The word milestone is used in a different way today but the meaning hasn’t really changed. The Romans used milestones to help people know how far they had traveled and now we use the same word to record our journey through life. Every major event in our lives from the day we are born is a milestone for each of us. Learning to walk, our first day at school or getting married, are all our personal milestones.
Section IV
Milestones not only record what we did in the past but also describe what we hope to do in the future. We use them to set goals in our lives and try to achieve them. Once we have done this we can continue on to the next and maybe more difficult milestone. In this way we have a purpose in life that gives us satisfaction and a reason for living. A milestone is a landmark today as much as it was in the time of the Romans.
